Flat Bar Bending/Metal Flange Roll Forming

What is Flange Rolling Machine

BIT profile bending machine has a strong section bending ability. It can be used as a large Flange Rolling Machine (Flange Bending Machine, Flange Roll Forming Machine).

In the past 30 years, due to the rapid development of China’s economy, about 20% of the machines we produce are used for flange rolling, especially large flange rolling that is difficult to mass produce.

For example, PBC-550, the factory manager once released a video to promote its large flange, the excitement can be felt across the screen.

The BIT series profile bending machine bends flat bar(xx axis, such as metal washers) in a harder way, and directly cold-forms the flat steel into a ring or arc with the required diameter. The roundness requirements are determined according to the requirements. It can be used directly on the cylinder body, or used as a connecting flange or support ring on the cylinder body. It is convenient to use and cheap.

Of course, rolled flanges cannot be compared with forged flanges, but they can be used on equipment that does not require pressure, and can also be used as connectors, supports, etc., with a wide range of uses. It is a simplification of the original process (customer steel plate arcing, splicing, correction, cutting inner circle, leveling).

Customizing Flange Dimensions with Flange Rolling Machine

A flange bending machine is a device used to bend flat steel, angle steel, and other profiles into circular arcs, commonly employed in producing flange forming. Flange bending machines come in various models and types, and can also be customized according to customer requirements. When inquiring about flange bending machines, the desired flange type needs to be provided, including the flange diameter, material width, thickness, etc.

Flange forming is achieved using a flange rolling machine with flat steel. The dimensions can be tailored according to customer requirements. When processing flange forming, customers need to provide the outer diameter, inner diameter, and thickness of the flange. With these three dimensions, the appropriate type of flat steel can be determined. The type of flat steel is determined by its width and thickness.

So, how is the width of the flange forming calculated? It’s quite simple actually. It is the result of subtracting the inner diameter from the outer diameter, then dividing the result by 2. For example, if the outer diameter is 500mm and the inner diameter is 400mm, then the width of this flange is 50mm. Additionally, consider the required thickness of the flange. If it’s 5mm thick, then we only need to use flat steel with dimensions of 50*5 when making the flange.

Conventional flat steel comes in strips, with lengths of either 6 meters or 9 meters. Some also use coiled steel strips to make flange forming. Whether flat steel or steel strips, the width is usually an integer, such as 30, 40, 50, or 60, etc. However, it’s difficult to find ready-made materials for non-integer widths like 32 or 38. In such cases, the flange dimensions can be adjusted, or slightly wider conventional flat steel can be used, and then the inner and outer diameters can be machined. Alternatively, for larger quantities, materials with the required width can be custom-ordered from steel mills.

Flange Rolling Process

Flange forming refers to cutting steel plates into strips, which are then directly rolled into circles on a flange-rolling machine. This method of producing flanges not only saves materials but also saves time and effort. The term ‘flange blank’ refers to a flange that has not been machined, which, according to flange standards, can be considered a semi-finished flange. In some industries, flange blanks can be used directly without machining.

Flange blanks produced by rolling can be customized according to user needs. When processing rolled flanges, it is essential to know the outer diameter, inner diameter, and thickness of the flange. With these three dimensions, the cutting size can be determined, which also determines the material for rolling the flange, including the thickness of the steel plate, and the length, and width of the strips. So, how is the width of the strips calculated? It’s quite simple, actually. It is the result of subtracting the inner diameter from the outer diameter and then dividing the result by 2. For example, if the outer diameter is 1500mm and the inner diameter is 1400mm, then the width of this flange is 50mm, meaning steel strips with a width of 50 can be used for rolling. If flame cutting is involved, material loss should be considered, and an additional 2 millimeters can be added. Therefore, the cutting width can be 52. Another situation to consider is when the diameter is small but the width is large. During rolling, the width may shrink, so it’s essential to leave some extra material during cutting. For instance, with an inner diameter of 700mm a width of 130mm, and a thickness of 20mm, the 130mm width may easily shrink during the flange rolling process due to compression. Hence, cutting can be done at around 135mm to leave extra material and avoid insufficient machining allowance after rolling the flange blank.

Processing thick flanges by rolling starts with cutting, where the cutting size is calculated based on the flange dimensions. After cutting, a flange rolling machine is used for rolling. Following rolling, the flange is rounded using a flange shaping machine, then it needs to be flattened. The weld joint must be securely welded with a break joint welding technique. The difficulty in processing thick flanges lies in rolling and welding. Large flange rolling machines are required for rolling, and break joint welding is necessary. If the welding is not firm, the flange is prone to cracking during later use.”

Features

Rolls are hardened & made from high quality steel, three rolls are uniformly driven to ensure the maximum bending torque and automatic compensation of the circumferential speed. The bending force is transmitted to the shaft roller through the movement of the hydraulic cylinder. All three rollers are driven to transmit the maximum torque to the profile, and the end of the profile can be pre-bent when bending the profile.

By adjusting the two 3D transverse guide rollers, they can be adjusted independently in six directions to ensure the best control of the flatness of the rolling, and to correct the distortion generated during the flange rolling process.

Story

This is a photo sent to me by a customer in Malaysia. He consulted that the BIT type section bending machine can process these parts:

According to the provided parameters, we recommend the PBC-120 profile bending machine and provide relevant parameters. The following are the bending parameters:

“How is big? Could you send me photos please. Btw what type of profile bending machine can make, roll this workpiece? Outer diameter 600mm, inner dia 400mm. Thickness 16mm.”

Based on this situation, we once again recommend another model PBC-200 profile bending machine.

So why would we recommend another machine with a higher section modulus after his doubts?

There are two reasons:

  1. Although BIT’s PBC-120 has been able to fully meet the production requirements of the factory, it may require two roll bendings during the processing process to meet the requirements of cold rolling; PBC-200 has a longer section Modulus bending ability can be rolled at one time, which improves flange production efficiency. And the price of the two machines is not much different, which is a small investment.
  2. The processing capacity of PBC-200 is much stronger than that of PBC-120. The customized PBC-200 can even bend H&I beams. The factory just needs to bend H&I beams, so we recommend PBC-200.
