Rolling Angle Iron

Angle Iron bending is a cost-effective approach to creating items with a variety of shapes that may be utilized in a variety of operations. Angle Iron sizes vary but they ensure ease of use and are a quick approach to creating new items. Angle iron rolling, its relevance, and the methods required for the process are all discussed here. What is the Definition of Angle Iron Rolling? Angle Iron rolling is a process that includes applying forces to an Angle Iron to modify its shape. This is done to obtain the desired form or shape for a manufacturing process. Only the bar’s outward features are affected by the external force. The angle steel’s dimensions, such as length and thickness, remain unchanged. The angle iron’s malleability also allows it to be shaped in a variety of ways.

Methods of curved angle iron: Roll Bending

Angle iron rolling procedures are similar in that they all have the same end aim of transforming angle iron constructions into the correct shapes. They do, however, operate differently. Knowing how to bend an angle iron requires an understanding of how the methods are determined by elements such as the thickness of the material, the size of the bend, the angle steel bend radius, and the intended purpose.
Roll Bending Angle Iron: The process of bending angle iron into rolls or curved shapes is known as roll bending. To make different curves or a large round bend, the method uses a hydraulic angle rolling machine. Because it takes advantage of the spacing between its rollers to generate bends and curves.

Curved Angle Iron(Cold Roll bending) Process: Rolled angle bending is a cost-effective process that eliminates sharp edges, and improves strength, angle rolling delivers functional and cosmetic value for many applications.
A common work of a PBH section bending machine (angle rolling machine, profile bending machine) is to make the angle ring or angle flange.

What are angle rings used for?

Angle rings also called angle flanges, are commonly made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, an angle ring is made by rolling a piece of structural angle into a ring and then welding the ends together. Typically, the ring is rolled with the horizontal leg radiating out from the center to create what is called a “leg-out angle ring” (as opposed to a “leg-in angle ring” or “off-axis” angle ring.)

Angle rings are components in air systems where the movement of air or movement of material by air is done. They are used in pollution control systems, agricultural equipment such as grain handling, and a multitude of other applications.

6 Steps to Bending Angle Iron

  • Material selection: The first step in angle bending is to select the appropriate material. Angle iron or angle steel are commonly used materials for angle bending due to their strength and durability. The material should also be selected based on the specific requirements of the project, such as the required angle, radius, and length of the bent angle.
  • Angle bending equipment: The angle bending process requires a specialized angle roll designed for bending angle iron or angle steel. The equipment can range from manual hand tools to fully automated angle roll machines depending on the complexity of the bending process.
  • Set up the angle roller: The next step is to set up the angle roll machine according to the requirements of the project. This includes adjusting the bending rolls, changing the tooling, and setting the desired bending angle.
  • Material preparation: The angle iron or angle steel is then prepared for bending. This involves measuring and marking the material at the desired bending point, and ensuring that the material is free from any defects or damage that could affect the bending process.
  • Angle bending: The angle iron or angle steel is then placed into the angle roll machine, and the bending process is initiated. The material is gradually bent to the desired angle or radius, using a combination of pressure and force. The process may be repeated several times until the desired angle or radius is achieved.
  • Finishing: After the bending process is complete, the angle iron or angle steel may require finishing or polishing to remove any marks or blemishes from the bending process. This ensures that the finished product meets the required quality standards.

The angle iron is an asymmetric profile, and it is often twisted during rolling, so the guide roller needs to give the angle steel an external force against deformation during rolling so that it can be corrected and reduced deformation.

The 3D guide rollers must be adjusted slowly to prevent the angle from twisting outwards. The mold combination is shown in the picture above. The pre-bending is asymmetrical, the rolling is symmetrical, and the friction clutch should be loosened.

The inward bending process of the angle steel is similar to the outward rolling of the angle steel flange workpiece. As shown in Figures 3-19, there will be two directions of distortion during the bending process. Therefore, 3D guide rollers (1) (Figure 3-18) and small guide rollers (2) are used. To provide the force, the small guide roller (2) is adjusted by twisting the idler.
Since the angle steel is easily deformed when it is bent inward, the diameter of the bent workpiece is larger than that of other profiles when the angle steel is bent inward.

Step-by-step of the Angle rolling process

  1. Symmetrical adjustment
  2. Start bending the workpiece with one end of the 3D guide roller, adjust the side roller and feed the workpiece to the end of the small guide roller, adjust the guide roller so that the workpiece can be rolled back normally, and the 3D guide roller will touch the flange end of the workpiece, which guides the workpiece to be rolled out from the machine.
  3. If the adjustment of the small guide roller is too large, the workpiece will be twisted inward.
  4. When rolling the workpiece, stop immediately when the other end reaches the middle of the 3D guide roller, and repeat the rolling of the other side in the opposite direction. Be sure to adjust the guide to the correct position, then bend as above until it forms a circle of the desired diameter.

Generally, angle steel bending differs from angle iron roll bending in that it is more concerned with forming the angle steel to a specific angle or degree, rather than a curve or radius.

What is Pre-Bending in Angle Bending Process?

Pre-bending refers to holding an angle iron firmly between multiple rolls and pushing it to create the initial bend. With the rotation of the rolls on the angle roll machine(aka angle bending machine, angle roll, angle roller), the material is fed through the rolls and once the 360-degree rolling process is completed, the pre-bent end of the angle iron makes it very easy to connect the 2 ends, thanks to the pre-bending process.

4 Reasons Pre-Bending is Crucial When Selecting an Angle Roll Machine

  • Reasons 1#: Eliminates Waste
  • Reasons 2#: Eliminates the Need for Extra Trimming
  • Reasons 3#: Saves Time
  • Reasons 4#: Smooth Bending Surface and Uniform Curvature / Thickness

Angle Iron, also known as L-bracket or angle Iron, is a 90° metal bracket that is often used in roof trusses. On support beams and structural platforms, Angle steels can also provide reliable stability and corrosion resistance.

How to bend the angle iron?

Leg-out rolled angle rings resemble an old-time straw hat (minus the top) where the leg out would be the brim. Heel-in rolled angle rings look like, and can function as pulleys. The most difficult orientation in curved angle iron is leg in. When not done correctly, there will be distortion in the horizontal leg (the leg in) that looks like an offset. With the proper methods and tooling, this distortion will be avoided.

Angle rolled leg in should be specified by the O.D. of the ring for most cases since there are two I.D.s of the ring; the I.D. of the easy way leg and the I.D. of the hard way leg. Heel out custom rolled angle should be specified by the outside diameter. The heel angle should be specified by the inside diameter.
